Slaven Vujić. Personal literary reflections inspired by the works of J. R. R. Tolkien.

There are moments in life that break us.

Not dramatically, with fire and fury, but slowly and painfully, until the world grows dark and we no longer recognise who we once were. Grief moves in. Shame remains. Suffering becomes the daily rhythm. We tell ourselves that this is simply how life will be from now on.

Then something shifts.

Unexpected. Undeserved. A breath of light in a place we believed light could never reach. A kind word. A song. A story that opens a crack in the soul.

Tolkien had a word for such a turn: eucatastrophe.

It does not mean the absence of sorrow. It means the moment when sorrow no longer has the final word.

The Wound That Speaks

Grief is more than pain. It is a language most of us have never learned to speak.

When the world gives us no map through sorrow, we reach for what feels safe: escape, silence, distraction. Tolkien’s fantasy can open another path. Through it, we may encounter reality more clearly and compassionately.

Middle-earth is full of loss. Elves grieve for fading light. Frodo carries wounds that do not heal. Gondor clings to former glory while quietly declining.

Yet these stories show us how to feel grief without being swallowed by it. How to carry it without losing ourselves within it. How to wait for the tide to turn.

Fantasy gives us images for what we cannot explain. It translates exhaustion, heartbreak and pain into journeys, shadows and burdens. We can recognise something human in suffering instead of seeing it only as our own weakness.

Frodo Faltered – And That Is Why He Matters

When Frodo reaches Mount Doom, he cannot let the Ring go. The burden overcomes him.

Yet the Ring is destroyed. In my reading, Frodo’s strength alone is not decisive. What lies beyond it also becomes crucial: Gollum’s fall, the unexpected reversal and the consequences of mercy shown earlier.

Here I recognise the heart of eucatastrophe: the possibility that even in our lowest moments, a seed of salvation exists that we cannot see.

Even Gollum still has a role in the story. Perhaps we do too.

The Power of the Turn

Tolkien knew war and loss. Yet he left us stories that dare to look suffering in the eye and speak of hope.

Eucatastrophe is not a cheap happy ending. Joy can break into a place where sorrow has already settled. Light can appear even when we no longer expect it.

That is why fantasy matters to me. It can teach us to acknowledge our pain, walk with it and leave the story open to a turning point.

You Are Not Alone in the Shadow

If you are reading this in your own darkness, I want to say: you are not the only one who has wandered deep into the night.

Your story is still breathing. The page is not finished.

Fantasy offers symbols when we have no words. It lets us see our own pain through another’s journey. Sometimes it shows us that pain was not the end, but a path towards something gentler, wiser and more whole.

That is the turn I hope for, and the one I want to leave room for in my own story.

When the Story Turns, Part Two: grief, Tolkien’s eucatastrophe and the quiet power of fantasy to offer hope.

[28,29,3
24,23,6
["post-18242","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-ad-sancta","category-duhovna-razmisljanja","category-promisljanja","tag-kad-se-prica-preokrene","tag-tolkien","tag-vjera-i-smisao
["GET
